I've been struggling to understand what's happening with my PC for days. I've checked everything that could cause the issue, but nothing seems to fit. My PSU is fine, both CPUs were working until I installed them on the motherboard and they functioned properly. However, things started to change quickly—my Ryzen 5 1600 stopped working suddenly, then my Ryzen 3 2300x fixed it, but a day later it failed again. I thought it was just a glitch, so I looked around more: the motherboard BIOS isn’t loading, and when I removed the CPU, it would briefly boot but then shut down instantly after I released the reset button. I’ve tried resetting everything, clearing CMOS, and even rewiring, but nothing seems to help. I’m really worried because I just lost two CPUs in under 24 hours. I’m hoping someone can explain what’s going on and help me out—thank you!
I highly doubt that your CPUs are damaged, so you can rest easy. Do you have another motherboard on hand to check if your CPUs are okay? I would advise flashing your BIOS but seeing that you can't get into it, there could be a potential chance that your motherboard has been bricked.
I haven't switched to a different motherboard yet because I sold some extra to a friend, though I suspect he upgraded. I plan to test tomorrow but I'm unsure how a motherboard could be damaged. Could this happen repeatedly? When I had the Ryzen 5 1600 in, it reported a VGA issue, so I removed it and found it was actually the CPU. After clearing the CMOS, it worked again, but I ended up repeating the process after restarting my PC.
I didn’t mention the method for flashing it either—it wouldn’t be a CMOS clear, and I haven’t found a way that worked before.
Through the spi header, jspi1 is positioned just above the battery. The pinout appears clear, but the BIOS seems damaged—especially around the power button and CMOS. I’ve seen two boards with the same issue; one (p7h55mlx) kept working until I removed the CMOS battery, after which the power button stopped responding. Keeping the CMOS in restored functionality, but it shuts down after five seconds. To fix it, I had to jump the PS_ON pin and connect a ground pin on the 24-pin PSU connector. It worked then. However, when I removed the CMOS battery again, the BIOS settings changed, causing it to freeze at the 00 code—essentially dead. I can’t post further without more details.
There’s an issue with the board. Attempt to reset the CMOS, swap out the motherboard battery, and update the BIOS. If none of these steps help, it likely means the board is faulty.
I've checked all the options but it seems fine. It was definitely my motherboard—thank goodness I got it back from a friend who let me. Everything is working properly now. I'm just puzzled about how my MSI ended up failing if I haven't used it in over a year. I lost track of the silicone lottery!
