Hey there, Matt. It sounds like Mirror's Edge is having some issues with resolution settings. When you try to adjust it, your screen goes dark briefly and the game stops responding. You mentioned trying right-clicking in the toolbar, pressing Alt+F4, and using control keys, but nothing seems to fix it. Let me know if you need more help!

Press control and alt, then click log out. After that, use spam escape to cancel before you fully log out. @ MattLantis

It depends on what you mean by "it." If you're asking about functionality, it may not work as intended on Windows 8. If you need compatibility, check the requirements or alternatives.

I'm using Windows 8.1 and frequently ran modded Skyrim which often caused my PC to crash. Sometimes I could fix it by logging out, which stops most processes and makes the system usable, though there are a few situations where a restart is necessary.
