You're dealing with a MacBook Pro from 2012 that's running sluggishly. You've tried using Super Duper cloning and reformatting, but the drive still won't boot properly. After cleaning it up in Disk Utility and setting it up as an extended volume, you're encountering an issue where the internal folder shows a gray label with a question mark and doesn't load beyond that point. Interestingly, when you connect it externally via USB, it boots normally. This suggests the problem might be related to how the operating system is trying to access the drive or a compatibility issue with the external connection. It could help to check for any recent software updates, ensure the USB port is functioning, and verify that the drive's firmware is up to date.

I have a 2012 13" MBP and Super Duper performed well with my Crucial MX300. Booting from a USB and installing macOS from there is also possible.

Sierra remains available on your Mac even after recovery, but installing Lion will require purchasing it separately. You can still access Sierra without cost once you choose the appropriate installation path.

IDK. Just make a bootable USB and boot from that. And if you formatted the SSD, there isn't any OS on the Mac. Unless you have a second drive in the disc drive bay...

Sierra will be available. Once you access the lion download, Sierra will be ready.

If your device fails to start when the internal drive is installed but works with an external case, there could be a faulty SATA cable. Visit a nearby electronics shop to purchase a replacement—it's usually affordable. This problem is frequently reported with the MacBook Pro 2012 non-Retina model.

I rely solely on the text interface Linux for these tasks. No other software is safe enough.

I repurpose an old USB HDD as a time machine and bring it back to its more basic state. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate HDDs and SSDs—it’s straightforward and user-friendly.
