Issue with high fan speed and overheating on the laptop?
Hello,
I’m facing a recurring problem with my HP EliteBook 1040 x360 G10, which is about seven months old. The cooling fan operates at high speeds and emits audible noise even when the system is idle or lightly loaded. The device also tends to overheat significantly, which impacts its performance and overall usability.
I previously had the laptop inspected by the vendor, who reported no issues. As a precaution, they replaced the motherboard, but the problem continued. The fan sometimes speeds up and maintains high RPMs without any demanding applications running.
CPU temperature increases rapidly, especially when the laptop is plugged in, reaching peak levels quickly. Even without active applications, CPU usage can spike to 95–100%, leading to excessive heat and reduced performance. The temperature also shows large fluctuations, with brief spikes reaching very high values even under minimal load.
Device specifications:
- CPU: 13th Gen Intel® Core i7-1355U 1.70 GHz
- RAM: 32.0GB
I have reformatted the system three times, but the issue persists even after a clean installation with no third-party software installed. This ongoing concern is affecting my productivity, and I’m seeking advice or updates that could resolve the fan noise and overheating.
Thank you for your assistance.
Best regards,

Good afternoon, I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Book 3; from what I understood scrolling forums and reviews, undervolting and overclocking are locked. I still want to use ThrottleStop for its included Windows Defender Boost feature, so I was wondering if there's anything else I can set on...

As for this;
Cleaned the air vents and ensured proper ventilation.
You might want to use a higher quality thermal paste in place of the one that came from the factory and see if that helps. To also add, you might want to prop the rear of the laptop up to allow for cooler, ambient air entering the vents of the laptop to cool it better.
You can check and see if the laptop is pending any BIOS updates.
Sadly there isn't much you can do since all laptop processors since the past 5 years are designed to run hot...so a 1000 Deg C bottom is considered normal by the processor manufacturer's.
There might be several issues or just one, so trying to guess could lead you in circles. Here are some general steps you can try.
Thank you for your reply. I have already carried out most of the steps you suggested, yet the problem persists. Could this be a widespread issue with the i7-1355U processor? I have reformatted my system several times, the service center replaced the motherboard, and no third-party software is installed. Still, the fan increases even when the computer isn’t under heavy use. This prevents me from fully assessing the device’s performance. Moreover, the temperature often reaches 100°C. What makes this case even more puzzling is that a coworker using the identical laptop model is facing the same problem. In contrast, our EliteBook 840 G9 models do not encounter this issue at all. I am uncertain if this is typical behavior and would value any additional guidance on this matter.
