Issue with GPU causing system crash or forcing a restart on the computer.
Hey, I’ve noticed some problems with my PC lately. It keeps showing a BSOD, specifically an exception that isn’t being handled, and the error message always points to amdkmdag.sys (the AMD GPU driver). This has mostly occurred when OBS is running, though I’m not sure if that’s the main cause since I use it a lot for work.
I’ve taken the following steps:
- Ran the AMD uninstaller to completely remove the GPU drivers and reinstall the latest version.
- After a few days, it happened again, but this time with an older driver.
- Reinstalled OBS and updated Windows.
- Performed standard Windows scan commands.
- Updated to the newest chipset driver released recently.
I ran a memory test using memtest and got no errors. The first crash was at 12/12, after which I reinstalled the driver with the uninstaller and managed to play games without any crashes for four days (up until today).
Today I reinstalled the GPU right after the first crash, but it crashed again almost immediately.
My PC is brand new and only about six months old.
Here are the details:
- Intel 9070xt Sapphire Nitro+
- AMD 9800X3D
- Windows Media Center Gaming Plus Wi-Fi X870
- G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 64GB DDR5-6000 CL30
Any advice would be really helpful.

When sharing a troubleshooting thread, it's standard to provide complete system details. List your specifications clearly as follows:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
Include the PSU age along with its make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard is also noted here.
All four .dmp files confirm this information;
amdkmdag.sys is the current one.
Ideally, turn off the iGPU in BIOS, then use DDU in Safe Mode to eliminate all GPU drivers (Intel, Nvidia, AMD), reboot, and finally install the newest driver from AMD's support site via an elevated command—Right click installer > Run as Administrator.
Stick to one thread unless you risk confusion.
As you mentioned, it seems AMDKDMAG.DS is the issue. However, I've performed a clean reinstall twice, using various versions, and nothing has changed. Both the official AMD site and AMD community suggest using their tools rather than DDU, which is why I followed that advice.
I just noticed that every time, OBS was open and I was either recording or stopping it, since all four times I went back to a corrupted video that wouldn't play.
