Issue with dual GPUs on models 4070 and 3060
I recently purchased a 4070 for dual monitors with my 3060. I’m aware Nvidia no longer supports SLI, just wanted a GPU per monitor but it caused issues like slow startup and random glitches. The MSI debug light stayed orange for about 30 seconds. Some software also became more unstable. I have an MSI MAG Z590 Tomahawk WIFI board, Nvidia 3060 and 4070, Intel 11900k, Corsair rm1000x PSU, 32GB Corsair DDR4 RAM, one SSD, two HDDs, a NZXT CPU cooler, and an AOC/DELL display. My OS is Windows 11 Pro Insiders Edition release 25352.1 zn_release. I’m not sure if the problem is with the motherboard or Nvidia software, but any advice would be helpful.
Using a second GPU for a second monitor is unnecessary since modern GPUs can handle multiple displays. You only need additional ports if you're connecting more than one monitor, not just two.
I prefer HDMI and often play intense cyberpunk 2077 sessions while using wallpaper engine on my secondary monitor. This helps reduce the strain on my 4070 VRAM, which is already struggling.
Offer the 3060 model. Pair it with the 4070 unit. Use the Intel IGPU for the second one.
I do a lot of things on my computer I have a lot of things running while playing games (SQL server, background applications Which require the 11900k single thread capabilities) and I like the ability to do so while having good thermals etc. I am not asking how to make my pc better I am asking if this is a fixable issue or not and if not that is fine. But thank you for the suggestion.
Just to clarify, the weaker card is probably just doing nothing except blocking the monitor connection. You're adding more problems by doing this. I have three monitors on a 1060 6GB card with no issues and I can play all games. (I'm using just the center monitor, and I know my card isn't getting enough power.) Your concerns don’t match the issues you're creating by taking this approach. I’d strongly advise against using two graphics cards on one PC. Anything could go wrong, so the best move is to remove the second card. It would be worth keeping in another system or as cash. P.S., I use Rainmeter, Lively and YouTube when starting a game—it works fine. Your setup might still encounter errors even then.
It's possible the 4070 will handle the tasks, but only if connected to one monitor. If the PC has the 3060 inside and just a single display, it might not function properly.
I see, I’ll wait a bit longer to read through the forum and check what others think. I’m okay with adjusting BIOS or using OC settings if needed. I just know there’s a 50/50 chance someone has the right solution, and I’d really like to run it smoothly. I totally get what you mean, and if there’s no answer, I’ll go ahead and replace my RX580 with the 3060 on another machine. Thanks for the advice!
