I'm setting up a simple mining rig and trying to turn a few quid from selling leftover parts. The old machine had 16 GB of DDR4 3200 MHz RAM, which is more than enough for mining. I replaced it with a new 4 GB module at 2666 MHz, but it's not functioning properly. The system powers on but doesn't display anything. I'm confused about what might be wrong. It worked fine with the 16 GB setup, so removing one module and keeping 8 GB seems reasonable. However, with the new 4 GB module, nothing appears. The board I have is an ASROCK B450M, and the memory capacity matches the listing you shared.
You had a 16GB setup with two 8GB units and added a single 4GB module. Are you using that 4GB module alone or combining it with one of the larger modules from the other kit? This would give you 12GB total. If you're pairing it with an 8GB unit, try testing it without the extra module first—matching RAM brands, speeds, and timings is essential.
It's just the 4 gig module by itself. The board should accommodate it, as I confirmed. Mixing and matching isn't recommended—it would undermine my goals. It might be a faulty part, but it seems unlikely given its newness. I'm experiencing bad luck with tech parts lately. If it turns out defective, this will be the third such issue I've encountered this week!
I align with Slyaerking92's perspective. When XMP was activated for your 16GB module to operate at DDR4-3200, the DDR4-2666 version may struggle (as it’s only certified up to 2666 MHz). After enabling XMP, the motherboard attempts to support DDR4-3200 XMP on the DDR4-2666 memory.
Just tested the stick in the b550—it functions perfectly, so it’s definitely not faulty. I’m trying to figure out how to turn off XMP now. The last time I adjusted the BIOS was during an American Megatrend on my old Packard Bell!
Oh FGS! There's no option to switch XMP off. The only option is to use a preloaded profile which is for my 8gb 3600mhz modules or changing it to auto, which allows me to choose the exact memory type and voltage. I thought brilliant! So set it to DDR4, 2666mhz and 1.2v which is exactly what it says on the ram module and it doesn't do anything. I tried putting it alongside an 8 gig one and that didn't work either. There's no other options so not quite sure what I am doing wrong. Surely if I choose the exact memory type it should work. Tried both slots and same result. Any other ideas before I give give up and hit the bottle!
