Hey there, folks! Sorry if this isn’t in the right place. This is my first time asking for advice on a forum, but I think this issue is pretty unusual. I’m really curious to see if anyone has any ideas.
To give you a quick overview, I’ve spent years working in computer retail and have built several systems. In my free time, I’ve also helped troubleshoot computers for others. I’m fairly comfortable with tech, so I’m confident in what I know. As mentioned, I upgraded to a 2700x, Rog Strix 470-f Gaming, and added 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Team RAM (two 16GB sticks) from my old AMD 8350. My system also got an SSD and HDD from the previous setup—those are still in use because they’re new (1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 2TB WD Blue, plus an archive drive I salvaged and an 8TB backup).
The problem started after installing these new parts. Everything seemed fine for basic tasks like downloading drivers, Steam, Chrome, Revit, and streaming YouTube in 4K. But when playing games like Rocket League, CS:GO, or Dirt Rally 2.0, things got weird. I could download games on Steam and watch YouTube at 4K, but online play failed completely. Sometimes the game would load, then I’d be stuck with a disconnect screen or a countdown timer that wouldn’t let me play.
I tried to rule out a few things:
- **Router issue?** I spent a lot of time port-forwarding, resetting network settings, disabling firewalls (the media router was slow).
- **Mobile connection?** I tethered my phone with 4G and still faced the same problems.
- **Drivers & software?** I reinstalled drivers, updated BIOS, refreshed network settings, ran `ipconfig`, and even reinstalled Windows.
- **Hardware changes?** I removed RAM, changed my GPU back to an older model, updated BIOS, and even replaced the motherboard (from MSI X470 Pro Carbon). I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.
- **Malware?** I ran a full scan with Malwarebytes, but after three days of troubleshooting, I was getting really frustrated.
- **CPU & RAM?** I couldn’t confirm if those were the culprits, but I’m not sure how they’d affect my gaming experience.
So far, nothing seems to be working smoothly online or in single-player modes. I’m open to suggestions and happy to hear any tips you might have. Thanks for your help!
Hi, thank you for your message. I've tried using my phone to connect and the issue continues, so it seems like the problem isn't on my router. I've checked all the router settings and confirmed there are no blocked ports. I've also tested everything else related to the router. On the other hand, switching my motherboard back in resolved the issue. I can still play games on my PS4 and Xbox One, but changing the cable to match the Xbox One didn't help. Appreciate your advice!
I tested two motherboards to see if the issue was present, but I’ll re-examine the BIOS just in case. Both boards are X470 models—one from MSI and another from Asus ROG.
After testing various options, I discovered the CPU might have been the issue. I shared this with overclockers who also faced similar problems, as a new 2700x model was soon available. Once I installed it, everything functioned properly again. My Cinebench scores improved significantly, making it a win-win situation. Hey sorry after sharing the update, I didn’t check for any responses right away. I was trying to get it up quickly and thought the network card on the motherboard might be the issue, so I swapped it out and bought a new one from Amazon Prime. The board that worked before was my old FX board M5A97 L2.0 with the 8350 chipset. Eventually it turned out the CPU was the real problem, making the replacement of the new board difficult. At least I was relieved when everything finally functioned properly.
