Hey everyone, I'm facing an issue with my NVMe drive. It's only reaching about a quarter of its advertised speed (970 EVO) when using the M2_2 slot on my board. It functions fine in the slot assigned to the CPU (M2_1). Upgrading the BIOS or AMD's new chipset driver didn't resolve the problem, nor did a Windows reinstall or the Samsung NVMe driver. After checking HWinfo, the NVME controller shows PCIe 3.0 x4 at 8.0 GT/s as the current link speed. However, the PCIe Bridge appears to be slower—explaining my drive's read/write speed (~830 Mb/s instead of the expected 3500 Mb/s). The BIOS option to force the chipset PCIe to Gen 3, 4 or Auto doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions? Thanks!

How many gadgets are connected to your setup? Are there extra SATA units? What USB ports exist? Do you have any network hardware? All Ryzen processors offer just four PCIe lanes (Gen 3 through Zen+, then Gen 4 beyond) for the chipset connection. Every connected device uses this central link: every SATA interface, each extra USB port, all PCIe bays except the initial M.2 slot, plus Ethernet, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Hi, thank you for your message. You’re using only a mouse, keyboard, and headset connected through USB, with a Corsair Fan Hub and AI-O running on separate USB headers. It seems normal for your setup. Based on the MSI manual, it looks like the M.2 slot should work without issues.

Ethernet or WiFi connections will also be made via that uplink. It's possible the built-in sound is linked through this same connection. Have you attempted resetting the BIOS and then applying "Optimized defaults"?

Following the latest bios update I began using optimized configurations without success. Apart from configuring an XMP profile and the curve editor, I didn’t modify the bios settings. At least nothing that might affect the PCIe lane arrangement of the chipset. Checking HWinfo, WiFi, Ethernet, USB, SATA controller, and the Samsung NVME controller revealed the AMD Audio controller—currently listed as PCIe 4.0 x16.

The chipset can support more than four PCIe lanes, though any connected devices will still be limited by the CPU. Refer to the diagrams in that Reddit thread. Regarding your issue, have you checked older BIOS versions? Edit: You might want to disable other built-in devices for testing. Edit 2: Did you install the newest AMD chipset drivers?

Thanks for the explanation – that clarifies things. I could revisit version 1.4 of the BIOS, as the problems I saw in the last beta versions are still there in the latest non-beta release. Actually, I haven’t tested the drive with any older BIOS versions yet. The AMD chipset drivers are current (released recently) from AMD directly. I’ll see if disabling LAN, Audio, etc., in the BIOS improves performance.

Disabling LAN, audio, WiFi and other settings in the BIOS didn<|pad|>. I’ll revert to the earlier BIOS version, after which I have no more options.
