Issue with Beelink Mini S N5095: black display remains after restart
I face a rather unusual issue that seems to prevent a proper shutdown or restart.
Normally, everything functions flawlessly on Windows11 or Linux, but when I attempt to restart or power it on before it has fully cooled—typically 5 to 10 minutes—I encounter several problems.
If I try to restart before the cooling period ends, the blue power LED illuminates, the cooling fan spins, yet the system goes dark.
Should I leave it on, it remains stuck in this state indefinitely.
When this happens, I can't turn it off with the power button: the blue LED turns off, the fan stops, and after a short delay the LED comes back on again while the fan continues running, but the screen displays black.
To resolve it, I unplug it and let it cool down before attempting to restart normally.
I have already taken several steps:
- Replaced the thermal paste on the processor (it wasn’t old)
- Cleaned the RAM contacts
- Ran MemTest for two hours and a half
- Removed glue residue from the motherboard caused by the backup battery
- Verified the backup battery voltage is stable
- Disconnected the battery from the mini-cabinet, cleaned the board thoroughly with alcohol and brushing
- Reset BIOS settings back to default
- Used the CMOS reset button for ten seconds without power
- Tested on a different monitor
- Switched HDMI cable
- Attempted booting via Ethernet on RJ45 without peripherals
What I haven’t done yet but consider trying:
- Reinstalling the BIOS
- Reflowing the processor
- Inspecting the motherboard capacitors (may be challenging once it cools)
I would really appreciate any guidance or suggestions from others.
Since everything points to a potential issue with the CPU or GPU temperature, I tried some adjustments. I added an extra fan to push air into the device and sealed the openings to ensure proper airflow through the vents. This helped lower the working temperature, which I track using the Core Temp app—from 60 to around 43°C. However, the only improvement was a faster restart time when playing video. No restart occurred. The system still functions normally: the fan activates, the blue LED lights up, but the video fails to appear. That’s why unplugging it resolved the problem. Once the temperature dropped, the video started almost instantly and the device turned on correctly after just a few seconds.
I don’t think the problem lies with software or drivers.
I tried using different Linux distributions to check if it affected the behavior.
I set up Lubuntu, Linux Mint, MX Linux and everything worked the same.
The issue seems to be related to hardware (or BIOS), especially since the CPU cools down and booting is normal.
My doubts keep pointing to BGA solder on the CPU/GPU, possibly altered capacitors or a temperature sensor giving wrong readings. I’ve been keeping an eye on it during use and the data looks fine.
