The extra pins shouldn't affect the setup, you can use the 6-pin connector without an adapter.

The cable's actual current capacity is limited, as those two pins are meant for grounding and aren't essential. The card will verify the presence of one of those pins, which can prevent the device from powering on if the +2 isn't detected. You'll need an adapter. Generally, if your power supply lacks the required cables, it won't manage the intended load.
