Issue with achieving seamless performance in Apex gameplay.
Hello! I was recently able to upgrade to a 3080 (Gigabyte Gaming OC, 12gb) to fully realise the potential of my system & 1440p 144hz monitor, and for the most part, everything's been running well! However, I've been facing some issues with Apex Legends, where (despite a consistent 144 fps, limited to 141) the game just doesn't feel smooth at times. Places like the dropship or firing range feel perfect, but in game can feel anywhere between normal and like I'm playing at sub 60 fps. Since I was using this rig prior to the upgrade, I know all the other hardware is stable and capable, but I'm honestly fearful there's a hardware problem with the new GPU. For context, in addition to the GPU, I'm running: - Ryzen 5800x, temps are stable & usage in game appears to be fine - 4 x 8gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro, 3600 MHz (DOCP profile enabled & stable) - Samsung 970 Evo plus NVME, 1TB - AOC AGON AG241QX Monitor (G-sync compatible, worked flawlessly as freesync with previous Radeon 590) I've been trying & tracking everything I can for weeks, to no avail. Notably: - Frame times seem stable - userbenchmark is fine ( https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/51112088 , from before a few optimisations) - No frame skipping appears to occur on UFO test - Uncapping in-game frames makes no difference - Render latency is consistently low - Screen tearing minimal (had a few issues with g-sync by itself, seems to need 141 fps cap and vsync fast enable to work fully) - Resplendence WhySoSlow didn't pickup anything - Optimised NVCP as best I could, following tutorials for similar setups I'm rather desperate and at a loss for what to do now tbh, any help would be beyond appreciated. If you need me to provide any logs, such as from MSI Afterburner, I'll get them ASAP. Anecdotally, it's such a strange and icky feeling when it happens, like I'm suddenly playing at ~ 40 fps, but with no apparent spikes in temps/usage/frametimes etc.
I faced the same problem earlier. I turned off G-Sync in the Nvidia control panel and it resolved everything. After that, I stopped digging further since my panel only enabled G-Sync between 45-85Hz, making the 165Hz issue unclear. Disabling it seemed to fix it. Could be a good idea to test before getting too deep into troubleshooting.
Consider testing with just two RAM sticks and observe the impact. Additionally, perform a full system reset, reinstall drivers, and adjust the XMP profile. If everything functions correctly, I'd proceed with a return for replacement.
Ensure "On" or "Off" for VSync Fast. Gsync and frame cap aren't compatible. Adjust accordingly.
Previously I experimented with adjustments, but it didn’t change much. The game now runs slower overall. G-sync acts oddly for me, causing noticeable screen flicker at load times—mainly during frame drops or loading screens. Compared to Freesync, it feels even less stable, which is unusual.
Could you clarify how the dimmer number might be influencing it? I'm willing to give it a shot, but I don't think it's a major problem. Appreciate the idea!
It's basically your sync, so your screen is the main focus. Try powering it down, adjust the frame rate to 144, and that should resolve any problems. Your setup can likely handle 144fps on its own without strange fixes. Also, avoid using a dp cable—opt for HDMI instead. (Note: You also have the same issue with a compatible GSYNC monitor, but this fix works for all of them)
