I was playing Factorio last night, but suddenly when I tried to deconstruct something using RMB, it didn’t work. I thought the game might have a bug. I restarted, but it still wouldn’t function. I tested RMB on other programs on my PC, but it failed there too. After restarting my computer, nothing changed. I tried it on my laptop as well, and it remained unresponsive. Both are Linux systems, so that could be relevant. I left it overnight, and it’s still not working. I suspect the RMB might have completely disappeared, but what makes me doubt that is how abruptly it stopped—sometimes it would work intermittently before failing. Another possibility is the mouse button itself; I recently experienced issues with my MMB, where it would randomly stop working (though sometimes it worked, like once every three times), but then it seemed to recover on its own. Could this be similar to what’s happening with my RMB? Have others encountered this issue before? It’s been about three and a half years, yet my LMB still seems to function occasionally. Another factor is the Rust game I played ages ago; I used a lot of RMB on a different, cheaper mouse, and it started to fail gradually rather than instantly. The SteelSeries Rival 3 (Amazon link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B082XQHPCL) might be worth checking. Is there any way to fix this? Could it be a small obstruction or something else preventing it?

Occasionally skipping use can be just as damaging as constant use. Just because something costs less or isn't used often doesn't guarantee it won't fail. Mouse switches often stop working eventually. When swapping them, I usually replace both if one seems faulty. You can check the switch by using an ohm meter to test its operation without power.

Thanks for the update. I managed to resolve it by gently pressing the mouse button. I understand this, but I was expecting a smoother process, not just intermittent failures. In my experience with tech, such issues usually indicate something is amiss, like a drop or malfunction. After adjusting the sensitivity with a mouse tester, it now works reliably when fully pressed, which matches what I was anticipating.

Check if it's a wireless model and whether you adjusted the battery. If it's wireless, did you replace the battery? Did you relocate the USB controller or cable to another port, such as the rear one instead of the front or via a hub? Have you experimented with another wired mouse?

Hopefully this remains functional for a while. You might see this as the suggested solution for many button issues in these discussions. But you'll likely notice it's only a temporary fix. Once the switch begins to fail, the problems become apparent. It tends to deteriorate over time. I usually avoid them and just swap them out.
