Hey there, friends. Before Christmas, my copy of GTA V ran into a problem right after the latest update. It would freeze and display a Windows error saying "GTA V Has Stopped Working." I noticed it usually happened 15 to 45 minutes after launching. A quick check showed a memory leak—high RAM usage, and the pagefile size seemed to help for a bit. I reached out to Rockstar Support, asking them to reinstall DirectX and C++ dependencies (all common solutions), but nothing resolved it. I tried several fixes from the Reddit thread "Better than Rockstar Support" and even messaged them multiple times over a month, but nothing worked. Then, another unrelated issue forced me to reinstall Windows 10. I backed up my games and saved files onto my mechanical drive, unplugged the SATA cables, and moved it to an SSD just in case. After the reinstall, GTA V started without crashing—though I didn’t reload my profile beforehand. I played for a while and was relieved. Later, when I reloaded my old profile, the same crash happened again. I removed the new profile and tried the one from after the Windows install. It was definitely the wrong profile all along. Rockstar couldn’t pinpoint the problem. Now I’m looking for a fix that won’t erase my saves, so I can enjoy GTA Online again. Maybe someone else with the same issue will find this solution soon—hopefully it shows up on Google. This version is the Rockstar Social Club edition, but the patch might work on Steam too.

To refresh your profiles in story mode, simply restart the game or navigate to the settings menu where profile options are available.

Find the unique folder in Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/Profiles and duplicate its contents elsewhere on your hard drive. Restore a profile by pasting it back into that location. Remember, this directory isn't tied to the game installation itself, but to where profiles and save files are stored.

Ugh... I thought you could reload it from the cloud. I had to reinstall GTA after switching to an SSD and lost my story mode progress. The Social Club still displays stats from my previous story mode. I was hoping the save file was saved in the cloud.

Ugh, sorry about that. They might check with Rockstar support about a cloud backup, but I doubt they have one.

It was a while back when I tried the story mode—it's always enjoyable to revisit.
