Issue encountered with Mozilla Thunderbird for Usenet newsgroups.
Issue encountered with Mozilla Thunderbird for Usenet newsgroups.
I was once quite active on Usenet newsgroups but haven't been so for a while. Recently, I downloaded and installed Mozilla Thunderbird and signed up for an account at the free newsserver news.eternal-september.org. I configured my user account in T-bird with eternal-september as the newsserver. Throughout the process, it never prompted me to log in with an ID and password, which is typical when setting up a newsreader account.
When I access "Manage newsgroup subscriptions," only a list of the server's own newsgroups appears, not the vast number of groups on Usenet. The "New Groups" section remains empty, and clicking the "Refresh" button doesn't fetch any additional lists. It also never asks for login credentials.
I've used Thunderbird and other newsreaders with Eternal-September and other servers before, but those were a long time ago. I might have overlooked something. I verified the server at isitdownrightnow.com, which shows it's operational. Anyone, could you assist me?
After reviewing the FAQs on the newsserver's website, it seems the updated Thunderbird version doesn't prompt about needing login credentials when creating an account. One must manually configure this later to request a username and password.
