You should be able to "dirty flash" the updated ROM, but keep a backup in TWRP recovery just in case. Nightlies aren't ideal for regular use and may have issues or bugs.
Yeah, I thought that too, but nope. A dirty flash of cm12 from cm11 didn't work for me (hammerhead). It booted but everything was crashing. As for the glitches thing, hells yeah. I've found that sometimes the nighties are quite stable, but for cm12 I have a massive battery drain bug from "miscellaneous". I looked it up and it appears to be extremely frequent wakeup events being made whenever connected to wifi, though, the bug was discovered in the snapshot builds ages ago and fixed, so I don't know what it's doing in cm's tree.
