Issue concerning minimal GPU consumption on a recent system (4060 8GB / R5 5600x)
So I finally purchased some new components for my 30th birthday and handed over my PC to a repair shop. For four days there were no problems until I encountered a black screen while playing games. I could still hear the game, but opening Task Manager was impossible. Eventually, I had to force shut down the machine. After that, I reinstalled the GPU driver, but it didn’t solve the problem. A few days later I reinstalled Windows and noticed very poor performance in almost all games except RDR2. When I played Stellar Blade after getting my PC back, I achieved 130 FPS with the GPU at 98% usage—no significant drop. It seems like a power-saving mode is active, but it’s not, and everything is set to maximum performance.
Before reinstalling Windows, my GPU was running at 95%–99% utilization. Now it’s barely at 50–70%, making it hard to play without noticeable lag. In Delta Force, the GPU usage dropped to 50–70%. I expected over 300 FPS in CS2, but I can barely hit 200 anymore. Benchmarks still show normal results.
I gave my PC back to the builders, who warned me that a GPU at 95–99% usage during gameplay is concerning. They said it’s better to be fully utilized while gaming (depending on the title).
I’ve tried several things:
- Reinstalled GPU driver with DDU in secure boot
- Used older drivers
- Reinstalled Windows
- Reset all BIOS settings to defaults
- Adjusted NVIDIA settings
- Set power plan to maximum performance
- Changed XMP settings on/off
I’m running out of options and planning to return the PC to another shop so they can diagnose the issue. It’s going to cost a lot, but I’ve already spent a lot on this machine and even hired people to build it...
Before I reinstalled windows, where did you obtain the installer for your OS? Did you set up the installation offline? Were all drivers installed through an elevated command, such as right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator, while in offline mode?
I used windows media creation tool, the second time I used rufus and got the iso from microsoft.
I installed the driver in offline mode yes as admin.
My current bios version is 7C56v1J.
I tried several different drivers, but I don't remember which ones. I'm currently using the newest driver.
What do you mean about sourcing the installer for the games? If you're asking where I installed Steam, then it's on my nvme2.
Thank you for your response. I appreciate the clarification. My current BIOS version is 7C56v1J. I have an MSI motherboard and notice that the BIOS name matches what MSI uses for their boards. You mentioned Gigabyte in the specifications, but you're referring to an MSI BIOS. If your system is running on an MSI board, then the provided link should be relevant.
