I just switched to Linux and added Steam to explore available games, but when I clicked the Steam icon it didn’t work—I ended up installing it through Steam Support instead.

Apologies if I missed anything. I know there are two Steam versions: one for Windows and another for Linux. If you used the Windows version, you might need tools like PlayonLinux to run it on Linux. Cheers

There a video on YouTube showing wanna cry running on wine. It can run and encrypt files but you have to be tricked into executing it, so it won't infect you unless you screw up. I have a trick for preventing that. Put /home on its own partition and mount it with the noexec flag. This way nothing you download can be executed. You will have to move the steam library folder to somewhere else like /opt, which is where steam should be putting game files anyway, it puts them in your home folder, I don't know why. did you get steam running?
