I discovered an old external hard drive, likely over 15 years old, and plugged it in to check its contents. After waiting a while, it appeared. I attempted to open a folder, but the system froze and eventually crashed. After some time, I restarted the PC, which stopped working altogether. When I unplugged the drive, the issue persisted. The motherboard seemed to be struggling with DRAM. During a stressful moment, I removed one RAM stick, and the PC functioned normally again. Once I reinserted it, everything worked fine. My machine is about a year old, running an ASUS TUF Gaming X570 PLUS with Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB RAM. I enabled AMP but didn’t overclock it, and I believe the processor was running at around 3000MHz. I’m trying to understand what caused this problem, but I’m not sure. Could this happen again by chance? Would it be safe to try the external drive once more? Thank you!

No, the old hard drive did not have an operating system installed on it.

No problem, just files. When I had to restart, I assumed it might be trying to read from the external HD, but it would only take me into the BIOS... After everything stopped working, I thought I had damaged my MoBo somehow due to something like that. But eventually things turned around, and I’m still confused... But glad it worked out in the end hehe
