So I've been trying to fix my high internet speed. Woke up today, and my game ping was bad. Figured out that when I am plugged in with ethernet to modem only my ping is fast. But when I plug into the router my ping is up about 30ms. My ping to my local server is the same either way but my ping to the location of game servers about 300 miles away is up dramatically by 30ms when compared to just plugging into modem alone. Of course I am only using ethernet connections. I have a Nighthawk R6700v3 modem. It has always worked fine until today and I did not change anything.
The issue might be happening right at your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or somewhere in between them and the game server. How are you figuring out how long it takes? Share the ping numbers you get. Open the Command Prompt on your computer, run "tracert" to find where the delay starts, then run "pathping" with the IP address of the server. Send those results here. You can copy them and paste them straight into this chat without copying and pasting everything again.
Putting a new device on the line changes how your computer gets its internet address. If you put your router back right away, it will probably get the same old one. I'd suggest writing down that address before turning everything off at night. Turn off both the modem and the router, then turn them back on in this order: start with the modem, then add the router. Finally, check what your internet address is now. If numbers are different, maybe your connection isn't working well.
The situation feels impossible right now. Basically, I am just using speedtest and testing different options for my Portland area where the game server is located. All of them come back at 52ms. Before yesterday, they would have been around 25ms. I went ahead and bought a new router to see if that helped it worked temporarily. My game ping was back down to 25ms and speedtest hit 21ms. Then I played a few rounds of fortnite and for no obvious reason my in-game ping jumped up to 50ms again. But my speedtest to Portland stayed at 20. After a little while, my speedtest to Portland went back up to 52 ms as well and has stuck there even after multiple resets of both modem and router. My next step is to replace the modem and see if that helps too. I will also try your method of leaving the modem off overnight too. When I connect directly now to the modem my game ping is still 50ms but speedtest ping is at 20ms. So I am not sure if speedtest will just change again when using modem only as it did with the new router. Maybe who knows? At this point. I have no clue why for like 20 minutes my ping was low in game when I first connected the new router. Just does not make much sense. I can replace the modem for free so maybe that will help...thank you for your time.
