While working with thermal paste on my CPU, I observed an unusual spot on the motherboard where the CPU was positioned—it looked as though it had melted. Now my computer won’t start. Am I in trouble? Should I replace the motherboard, CPU, or both?

I don't see any images yet. Could you provide more pictures from various perspectives?

It's hard to ignore the red circle on the CPU photo—it seems like a burn mark. The burn mark and the spot on the socket that looks melted are positioned exactly where they should be. They overlap perfectly.

Yes, you can share images of the four edges of the socket and CPU.

The pins at the bottom appear damaged or melted. The components are likely faulty.

I noticed a tiny bit of metal on the CPU side panel. The red circle in the first photo indicates it. I’ll need to replace the CPU and motherboard.

I first thought the CPU might be improperly seated, but there’s no visible socket or damage suggesting that. If the pins were bent during installation, they could have made contact and caused a short or incorrect connection. Determining the exact cause will be challenging. I apologize for the inconvenience and hope the RMA warranty resolves this issue for you. Please keep detailed records of the CPU condition and board state before shipping, and consider using tracking and insurance to confirm receipt.

I noticed the harm after removing the CPU to remove old thermal paste because it looked dirty. Could this affect other components on the motherboard?
