Is your computer taking too long to start?
I built this computer last August and since then everything has been working fine until Friday. I was putting the computer down for the night when suddenly it started freezing and wouldn't even start up the start menu. Before that, nothing had ever gone wrong. The next day, when I tried to turn it on, it stayed black for about ten minutes before anything happened. It took an extra thirty minutes just to get into it. Once it worked fine again. This went on until yesterday too. I timed this a couple times and used to take about eight minutes to boot normally, but now it takes way longer than that. Yesterday, my friend came over to help me figure out what was wrong. We updated the BIOS and checked some things that might be slowing things down. But during one restart, the computer just stopped working completely after I tried to pull up the BIOS screen. This morning is still happening, but I noticed the VGA light turned on when it first started before stopping off. I really need help with this! Thanks a lot! Let me know if you need more details; I will try to give them as soon as possible since this is my first time posting about something like this lol
Welcome to the forums! New friend, I built my computer back in August. When I post a thread about fixing something, people usually need to know all their parts like these: CPU cooler: Motherboard: RAM: Hard drive or SSD: Graphics card: Power supply unit: Case: Operating system: Monitor: Please add how old your power supply is besides making and model number. Also, put the BIOS version of your motherboard right now.
I managed to get this much power from my CPU. It's an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with a cooler that I haven't figured out yet. The motherboard is an MSI B550 Gaming Gen3. My BIOS info looks like E7B86AMS.P90. I have two pieces of RAM, each 8GB, from Corsair named Vengeance LPX, all running on DDR4. For storage, I have a few things: a Sandisk SSD that I'm not sure about the exact age or specs, but it's my oldest one and where Windows lives; a Teamgroup GX2 SSD; and two hard drives, a WD Blue 1TB HDD and a Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD. For graphics, I have a Geforce RTX 3060 Ventus 2X. My power supply is from Thermaltake named SMART with 600W capacity. Everything was bought on July 30, 2024. The operating system is Windows 10.
So is the computer just slow or stuck? Does taking a long time before Windows starts sound normal? That makes me think maybe Windows got messed up or the hard drive has issues. When I face this, my first move is to try booting with a Linux USB stick for extra checks and fixes using a portable USB like https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details...4_bit.html Also, if you try disconnecting all drives except the one running Windows, maybe that will stop it from failing to start.
Turn off everything connected to your computer, like drives or hard disks. Then restart the machine and make sure it boots up from the main board (BIOS) before anything else shows up. Is that how it usually starts?
Okay, I put them back on one at a time and my other SSD seems to be the issue. It had had some problems before, which I just attributed to a loose cable (as that's what happened last time it had issues), but the moment I put it back on, it took forever to get to bios again. So I'll have to replace it and try to get all the files off it. Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help!!!!
