Is this new PSU affecting your CPU performance?
I bought a brand-new fully modular power supply rated at 750W to swap in my old Corsair CX600M. I didn’t touch the CPU yet, but once I started a game it crashed twice and then the system just turned off. After that, the CPU was idling in the high 70s and would spike whenever it needed work. I thought about replacing the cooler and reapplying thermal paste, which still looked good. Others have had similar problems? I’m planning to install the stock Wraith cooler tomorrow to check if it helps. Here’s what I have: Ryzen 7 2700X, Asus Prime X470 Pro 32GB, 3200MHz, Corsair memory, EVGA RTX 2070, Super XC Ultra, Gigabyte P750GM (previously CX600M). I also watched idle temps in BIOS for about five minutes and they stayed around the high 60s.
That's quite intense. Likely around 20°C too hot during idle. Back in the 50s, probably hitting 60°C at idle is common. In Windows, idle temps are mainly affected by room temperature, but it's definitely worth noting. What were the load temperatures? Were there any unusual spikes before you took the cooler off?
The room felt milder than before, around 24C at most. I thought maybe the temperature had risen, but even then 70-80 seems too warm. Right now I can't measure load temps because anything that needs power causes a quick spike and then the system cuts off. It probably overheated enough to shut down. Before it was warm but in the mid-80s. I also realized I forgot to check the cooler I have—it's an NZXT Kraken M22.
Verify the pump thoroughly. Maximum throttle rating is 90c. Shutdown threshold is 105c. If the aftermarket cooler performs better, it suggests the M22 might not be functioning properly. A single 120 rad is close to the limit but insufficient. The aftermarket cooler suits 140w chips.
While checking out the M22 a few months later, I realized it isn’t exceptional, but it still looks decent and has performed adequately. The spikes I noticed suggest it might reach 105 even briefly. I was expecting it to meet expectations, but since it doesn’t, I’ve been thinking about upgrading for a while now. A better model would make the front case look nicer and improve the overall appearance compared to a plain design with another fan underneath. I’ll need to see how the stock cooler fares before deciding if troubleshooting or replacement is necessary.
I brought back a power supply tester from work and it’s functioning fine. The wraith issue disappeared immediately, and everything performed noticeably better than before. It seems the M22 has a problem. I checked the microcenter and used an H100i platinum in white—it’s much quieter than anything I’ve heard before, and all systems are working well. Maybe my old power supply wasn’t providing enough power for the CPU to run at full capacity, or perhaps the cooler failed around that time. Thanks for the assistance!
