My main question is: are the latest motherboards significantly better or faster than what I currently have?
Are there any upcoming or soon-to-be releases I should keep an eye on?

What board are you considering? The APU mentioned in the thread title uses the AM4 socket; if you're checking an AM5 socket, they won't work together.
