I’m unsure about sending it back. I need to enjoy games and keep many browser tabs open, plus possibly run several programs. I’m not sure if this will help with editing later. Do you think the 12 cores could be a good upgrade for the 6 cores? Or should I consider using the 5900X money to upgrade the 5600X instead? Also, what about the 11th generation Intel chips?

Software windows can run on any modern quad-core processor. When it comes to editing, if your program demands more processing power, additional cores will significantly help. But if you're using nvenc for rendering, you can manage with a less powerful machine. To ensure longevity, an 8-core CPU is advisable. If you prefer Intel or AMD and need to consider availability, Intel's next-gen chips aren't ready yet, while AMD CPUs are often out of stock. For video editing in 4K or higher and heavy multitasking, a 12-core processor offers the best balance. For gaming, lighter tasks work with an 8-core setup, and a 6-core CPU suffices for casual gaming and occasional video work.

If you assume you require 12 cores and 24 threads without knowing their purpose or usage, you might be overestimating. Stay adaptable for what’s coming. The future could demand more threads tomorrow, so invest in the CPU you currently need. Prices and capabilities may drop significantly later. Unless you're working with extremely detailed models or real-time 8K editing without GPU help, a 6 or 8 core should suffice. I personally use an M1 MacBook for 3D CAD and rendering—it’s surprisingly capable given its small size. It’s impressive for its time, though it handles tasks just as well as my main desktop.

All our info so far suggests it won’t be great—maybe just a bit better than Zen 3 in games... but honestly, as someone who’s been around a while, I’m not really into it. 5900x is the perfect pick, you’re not missing anything. Just sit back and let both sides settle with 7nm/5nm using DDR5.
