Hello, regarding the latest updates: There are no downsides to using the newest iTunes version. Apple Music remains available for your existing purchases. You can continue shopping on the iTunes store as usual. Downloading tracks from iCloud to your phone or PC is still possible without needing to store them in the cloud.

I'm using the newest update of iTunes. It doesn't remove your existing purchases—your music remains intact, and I just added a new track a few days back. You can also extract music from a CD in the usual way.
