OS: Windows 10 Display: GTX 960 Processor: Intel Core i5 4690k @3.5 At preview or recording, all layers appear fine except the monitor capture. It just displays a black screen while the mouse movement looks normal. Anyone have any suggestions for a solution? A quick Google search didn’t turn up any results.

I don't possess a solution for you, yet I can share that I face the same problem with VLC—though it functions properly when the monitor is selected.

You're experiencing fewer issues with alt-tabbing because the monitor capture runs smoothly in a windowed mode.

It seems the software wasn't updated properly the last time I checked.

I searched for "OBS Black screen win10" thinking it might be related to the operating system issue. It seemed like the OS was the cause since the problem appeared after installing Windows 10 without driver updates.
