Hi,
I’m thinking about swapping my current laptop, an ASUS TUF Gaming F15 with an i5-11400H, 24GB RAM, and a GeForce RTX3060. It’s mainly for 3D work, animations, and some gaming. I’m not fully happy because it gets hot a lot and doesn’t handle complex tasks well.

I’m wondering if selling it and spending an extra 1000 or 1500 € would be worth getting something better with an RTX4080. When I compared the RTX4070 to the RTX3060, the performance gap wasn’t huge given the price difference. Right now, I rely on this laptop as my main computer, and I need a powerful one for work since I travel a lot and often miss out for 2–4 months each year.

On the other hand, I’m also considering keeping it, raising my budget, and buying a desktop around 2500 euros. I could tolerate working on a less powerful system for a few months during the year. I’m unsure if investing in a laptop is smart, but if it makes sense, I’d like some recommendations on what would fit better.

When you require movement between locations and prefer doing it face-to-face, keeping your laptop at home and using a desktop is recommended. This setup allows you to continue working on-site for client demonstrations. You may find these discussions useful:
- If you're considering purchasing a new laptop
- If you wish to set up a desktop
(the relevant thread should be placed in the Systems section)

Based on your specific needs and the travel methods you employ, a mini-ITX setup paired with a portable monitor could serve as a satisfactory middle ground.

I believe I can handle the worst performance for 2-3 months. But while comparing desktops and laptops in the same price range, I saw a big difference between them. So, I think I'll stick with my current laptop and raise my budget to buy a better desktop PC.
