Hi,
I’m considering upgrading to a new Windows gaming laptop since my 2015 MacBook is nearly finished and my 2018 desktop feels outdated and slow. I want to merge the two into one device—a gaming laptop. Ideally, I’d like to play modern titles like Starfield at 1440p or higher, though I’m aware that might not always be achievable. I have a 4K monitor for work sessions, but I don’t expect to be able to game in full 4K resolution.

I’ve been browsing Lenovo and Legion options but haven’t been able to compare them clearly. I’d really appreciate your help with this decision.

Here are the details as requested—thank you very much!

1. Budget: £1200-1500 (approximately $1850, though laptops might be pricier locally)
2. Screen size: around 16 inches, preferably under 25mm
3. Resolution: 2560x1600 or 2560x1440
4. Portability: Needs to be reasonably easy to carry, mainly for home use; maybe take to work once a week at most
5. Battery life: Not a major concern
6. Gaming requirements: For games like Starfield, aim for at least 1440p, minimum 1080p
7. Work use: Will also handle office tasks, but not heavily processor-intensive
8. Storage: At least 1TB
9. Preferred retailer: https://www.currys.co.uk/
10. Desire: Keep the laptop for at least five years
11. No optical drive needed
12. Brand preference: Not specific—just avoid looking too flashy, as I’ll need it at work sometimes. Lenovo models don’t seem suited for gaming
13. Location: UK

Looking forward to your advice!

The RTX 4070 appears to be a model suited for budget-conscious buyers. Curry offers options with either Intel or AMD processors, both compatible with 1440p displays. The AMD version is marginally newer, while the Intel remains a premium choice. Both models include a 1TB SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM (AMD features faster memory), and an 8-hour battery life. Screen quality is comparable between the two laptops. The Intel model features dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, whereas the AMD model boasts numerous USB ports at various speeds and is slightly lighter.

It might not be the maximum performance, but it should still work. You can always maintain 1080p and/or apply DLSS/FSR upscaling to boost FPS over time.

At that price range I would consider used or refurbished 4080 laptops that aren’t too outdated and come from reliable sources. The gap between the 4070 and 4080 is significant enough to notice, and you’re right on the edge of getting the 4080 model. I managed to get a MSI Titan G77 with a 4090 for €2100 (around £1900), which is a €6000 laptop and I’m happy with it.

I recently purchased an Asus G14 at a discounted price of $1299 Canadian. It features the RX6800 and Ryzen 7 6800HS processors. Some newer models offer updated chipsets like 4060 or 4070. The display is a significant improvement with a 2560x1440 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and color calibration. Battery performance rivals that of a MacBook, lasting 7 to 8 hours without gaming. A useful feature allows limiting the charge to 60% to maintain battery health when plugged in. It's a bit under your budget but definitely worth considering. The only drawback is the storage capacity—only a 512GB SSD comes with it, though upgrading to 2TB wouldn't be too much extra at launch.
