Is there a chance only one game might freeze at the same time?
Hello everyone. I recently purchased an MSI Katana GF66 laptop with these details: i5-12500H, RTX 3050, 16 GB RAM. I’ve been playing the old game Scions of Fate for a long time, but it’s been acting up lately. The system runs Windows XP or Vista, a Pentium III at 800MHz, 256 MB RAM, and it uses ATI RADEON, Nvidia TNT2, and MATROX Milenium G400 graphics. There’s 8 GB of storage available. It’s an AFK game that runs perfectly until it freezes after a few hours, but I’m not sure why. I’ve checked the power settings and set the monitor to never turn off or sleep, even with the hard drive. I’ve tried everything I can think of—reading online advice—but nothing works. The drivers are up-to-date. Could anyone help me fix this issue? Thanks in advance.
The issue after a period seems related to overheating problems.
Many users report gaming laptops struggling when not connected.
Typically, performance drops while the device is powered on.
A frequent reason is thermal throttling.
Coolers need to be compact and lightweight, which limits their power output.
They are also generally underpowered.
Monitoring tools like HWMonitor or HWinfo will show the current, minimum, and maximum CPU temperatures.
For Intel processors, a maximum temperature of 100°C indicates throttling.
The CPU reduces its frequency and power consumption to safeguard itself until conditions improve.
With a lower multiplier, the CPU might operate at full capacity.
What actions can be taken?
Ensure your cooler’s airflow is unobstructed and the fan is running.
Use Windows balanced power settings instead of performance mode.
Set a minimum CPU performance level around 20%.
It may seem odd, but adjusting the advanced settings of Windows Balanced Power to a maximum of 90% rather than the default 100% can help.
You might not notice a significant drop in performance.
Older games may behave poorly under these conditions.
I tried running Civ2 with a 6600k on Windows 10, but it ran very slowly. Task Manager showed excessive CPU usage across all threads—far beyond what the game required, since it was essentially a single-threaded application.
Running high CPU loads while plugged in can trigger throttling, leading to slowdowns or failure.
For one reason, I switched to Windows Compatibility mode for Windows 8.
I believe compatibility with earlier versions caused a lot of Windows emulation code to run.
Compatibility was the first step I attempted. No matter which version of Windows I use—service 2 or 3 on XP, Vista, or even Win 7—I find the game runs extremely slow and becomes unplayable. With Vista it’s a bit more stable, but I usually stick to Windows 7. I plan to try Windows 8 now. It doesn’t seem like the issue is overheating; even when connected, the CPU stays at 70% and it’s in gaming mode with extra fans active. I’ve adjusted the balanced power profile to 70 or 80%, but it still doesn’t solve the problem. It’s strange because in-game I see the client open, but the picture freezes. When I open Task Manager, the game doesn’t respond and I have to close it there. Meanwhile, the laptop handles other tasks.
If only a single game freezes on your computer, here are some steps you can take to resolve the problem:
Review updates: Confirm the game is installed with the most recent version. Updates often resolve performance problems and bugs that lead to freezing.
Assess your system requirements: Verify your computer satisfies the minimum specifications needed for the game. Failure to meet these can result in freezing or crashes.
Look for conflicts: Check for any overlapping processes or applications that might interfere. Terminate any unnecessary programs to free up resources.
Update drivers: Make sure your graphics card and other drivers are current. Download the latest versions from the manufacturer’s site.
Perform a malware scan: Execute a scan to detect any viruses or malicious software that could impact game performance.
Restart the game: If the issue remains, try restarting the affected application.
Seek professional help: If the problem continues despite these actions, reach out to the game’s support team for further assistance.
