Hi all,
Interesting issue: Replaced the boot hard drive (fresh Windows 10 Home 64-bit install) and now Windows 10 will freeze during the Windows splash screen (boot screen with the throbber). Peripherals are not responsive and disconnect after 10 seconds.
I've tried the folllowing to no avail:
- All the windows repair options, format&reinstalling multiple times
- Booting in safemode
- Booting from the previous SSD
The only way I've managed to boot is by removing the graphics card (so using the processor's in-built graphics).
Without the dGPU, the PC works fine
.
Tried installing the Nvidia drivers to retry with GPU but Nvidia dont allow installation of drivers without the card in place.
Unfortunately, I dont have another graphics card to test with.
Read in the forums it could be a bad PSU, so tried with a working Fox spirit 750W, but still same error. The dGPU removal could just be a coincidence...
PC spec:
- Intel I7 3770K, overclocked to 4.3GHz
- Asus P8z77-v, bios drivers up to date
- 16GB corsair vengeance ddr3
- Asus GTX970 strix directCU II
- Samsung evo870 1tb (the new drive)
- PSU corsair cs650m
- Windows 10 fresh install, and currently fully updated (verson 2009, build 19045.5965)
Looking for any advice on how to fix/debug.
Please no unhelpful comments of "PC old, replace".
Thanks in advance,
Val

Read in the forums it might be a faulty PSU
+
PSU corsair cs650m
What's the age of this unit? Even if the PSU is brand new, that unit and any with a green or yellow label from Corsair are seen as bad. Replace it right away.
I've tried using a working Fox spirit 750W but the same error persists.
I don't have any trustworthy information about this unit, but Reddit suggests it's another bad one.
I recommend borrowing a well-built 450W~550W unit from a friend or neighbor to check if the problem continues. If it does, your PSU is likely the issue. You could also try moving the GPU to another build and see if the problem remains.

Don't jump to conclusions about the psu just yet. Please review this information before you respond. Check if the asus P8z77-v works with pro and windows 10? Any updates on successful upgrades using this board? forum. Several users reported problems with this motherboard and windows 10. If your current windows version is 21H2 or newer, it might struggle with older hardware.:/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10...on_history
