Is the system's power consumption excessive?
Hey everyone, I'm facing a pretty strange issue. My house has an older electrical setup with a 150A breaker box. In my room, I have a 1000W power supply and a few other devices like a TV, two monitors, a headphone amp, DAC, and speakers. I rarely connect the TV or speakers because I'm nervous about it. When I do connect them while the system is running, I notice a faint, rhythmic buzz somewhere. Once I turn everything off, it disappears. The electricians replaced a faulty outlet, but the problem still exists. I'm considering downsizing my rig or switching to a less powerful power supply. My system specs are listed, and I'm really at a crossroads. I've tried replacing the outlet, but it didn't fix things. I'm worried about safety and want to avoid any risks. I just hope a lower wattage PSU could help, but I'm not sure. My main concern is keeping my home safe.
You attempted to silence your audio system just in case it originates from the speakers. Also, a 15A circuit breaker can handle a steady load of 1850W in North America. Unless the breaker powers more than one circuit, your computer should be safe even with the TV and speakers connected to the same outlet. Good luck!
This appears to require the help of a qualified electrician. A watt meter can confirm the reading, but your PC seems to draw under 800 watts when both GPU and CPU are active, which is well within normal limits. A system using less power won’t significantly reduce your outlet usage and should comfortably support gaming. For more insight, consider checking with a professional to investigate the noise source in your setup.
the choice between a 1000w and an 850w psu won't really matter since the power supply will only use what it needs. still, the power source might affect performance. i suggest going with the corsair rmx series.
I spent a lot trying to fix things in my room and pinpointed the source of the noise. It's coming from my computer. I can't exactly recreate the situation that triggers the humming, but I've found where the problem lies. Should I consider replacing the power supply? I'm pretty sure it's the PSU that's causing this. Additionally, since I got the PSU secondhand from a friend, I'm unsure about its previous condition. It might also be due to loose connections.
