I purchased an i7 4790k with an h97-d3h micro ATX motherboard from Gigabyte. I am currently operating at 4.4ghz and have disabled the processor speed limit or Intel speed step. At this speed, stress tests such as Geekbench 3 showed a maximum of around 90c, and the system remained stable without shutting down. The voltages are consistent, but I’m unsure if this setup is optimal for the CPU’s long-term health.

Internally the CPU will shut down at 100°C for self-protection... However, heat is closely tied to the lifespan of electronics... It's not just your CPU reaching 90°C, but other components in your setup will also experience higher temperatures... A better cooler is always advised when overclocking... And there are more affordable and effective options available than the standard OEM cooler.

The stock cooler isn't very effective unless you're not overclocking. You must be, though, so a budget option would be the CM 212 Evo. I wouldn't want my i7 running at 90 degrees because it likely will shorten the chip's lifespan.

The stock cooler performs poorly under overclocking conditions. A more affordable option would be the CM 212 Evo. It's important not to expose the i7 processor to temperatures above 90 degrees, as this could reduce its lifespan.

The K chip is almost fully overclocked, and with speed step turned off it tends to heat up a lot. I’d say the standard cooler is just enough. Many affordable options under $30-40 can bring those high temperatures down to around 20°C. Cryorig H7 is a commonly suggested choice. Cooler Master Hyper Evo 212, Xigmatek Gaia, and a few others are also worth considering.

Thanks. I’m planning to use a Corsair H60 watercooler.
