The number of CPU power connectors doesn’t really change gaming performance much, but it can matter if you’re using a limited power supply. For your 8-pin motherboard, buying a 4-pin PSU might not work properly and could cause issues. It’s best to get a compatible power supply for your setup.

In today's world, a PSU with just a 4-pin connector seems outdated—it likely dates back and may not meet modern needs. The key specs to focus on are whether it supports your system requirements and compatibility.

It's an i3-12100 with the power source taken from an older machine. It seems to function fine now; he just doesn't require a GPU these days.

The motherboard has 8 pins for the CPU, but you're wondering if filling all of them is necessary or just a subset is enough.

You're concerned about how gaming performance will be affected by integrated graphics. The 4-pin option seems viable, though it's important to note that even with a 12100 chip, its maximum power usage is around 90 watts. This could surpass the 4-pin CPU limits, but the 24-pin version can still provide at least 30 watts, making it feasible.

He’s focusing on learning mainly and playing simple old-school games, which means an iGPU should suffice for him.
