Is the MSI B550 A-PRO needing an APU to update its BIOS?
You're preparing to assemble a PC with an MSI B550 A-PRO and a Ryzen 5 5500. It looks like the motherboard won't support the APU right out of the box, so you'll need to update its BIOS first. Updating BIOS can be tricky, especially if you haven't done it before, and it might be helpful to aim for Windows 11 for your studies. You mentioned having a Ryzen 5 1600—would updating without an APU simplify the process?
Great news! The MSI B550 A-PRO supports USB Flashback, allowing BIOS updates without needing a compatible CPU. You only require power from your CPU EPS and the PSU’s motherboard power—no need to install CPU, RAM, or GPU. Here’s how you’d proceed. If you’re unsure or need guidance after installing the motherboard, feel free to tag me or DM me for assistance. No worries at all!
You can view the GPU interface independently of the CPU, but it typically needs the CPU to manage communication and operations effectively.
Updating the BIOS this way doesn’t show any interface or BIOS screen. The motherboard won’t display it unless you update the BIOS first. Your CPU needs to see the interface after the update. Insert the USB flash drive into the back USB port labeled BIOS, press the BIOS Flash button, wait about five minutes, and then access the interface since the BIOS is now updated. That’s all I can say. Sorry.
It's a smart idea to have a backup power supply just in case you need to update your BIOS. While outages are rare—usually happening only during severe weather like thunderstorms—having a spare can give you peace of mind. It’s not strictly mandatory, but it’s definitely worth considering for reliability.
I wouldn't be concerned about it. BIOS updates are quicker now compared to before. Just perform them when there’s no severe weather, you should be okay. I’ve updated BIOS for over 25 years and never needed a backup UPS. Keep things simple.
