Is the most affordable combination of B660 and i5-12400 reasonable?
I purchased the Z590 Aorus Ultra at a favorable price around 140$. It seems to be a solid choice, but I’m considering whether the 12th generation model is worth it. I can return the board if needed. At comparable prices, the cheapest options are the B660 series, like the Gigabyte B660M DS3H. Which option offers better value? The Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Ultra paired with an i5-11600K appears competitive, while the Gigabyte B660M DS3H or another similar board could work for a lower budget. The i5-12400 is marginally better than the i5-11600K, but performance differences are minimal. Power usage and temperatures matter less to me. I’m unsure if a weaker motherboard will suffice. If I go with the 11th-gen model, I already have a decent motherboard. What’s your advice? Should I prioritize a better board or a slightly better CPU? I plan to add a graphics card later, so integrated graphics will be sufficient for now.
The 11600K performs well without significant drawbacks, though it requires a cooler and offers limited upgrade options. If you don’t plan to upgrade your CPU and the build cost remains similar, performance differences are negligible. There aren’t many workloads where one option clearly outperforms the other. Regarding motherboard needs, the Z590 provides better expansion support and higher IO. For extensive USB requirements, the Aorus Ultra is an excellent choice.
