It looks unusual since booting to a 2A postcode without the cooler seems to make this P4 feel hot to the touch yet it behaves similarly on my E8400 three times only. It’s not causing damage, just a normal warm feel around 40°C and an auto shutdown at around 107°C. Now it’s handling P95 smallest FFTs at 4G 1.4V smoothly, showing it’s running at high speeds in the 40s. On my Chinese 92mm cooler, it only manages 4.4G at 1.4V and stays cool, same with the heatsink. The exhaust air feels barely warm too. Do these models really stay cool or are the fans giving misleading temperature readings? The heatsink itself feels almost untouched, suggesting good thermal contact between the die and the IHS. This could explain why they feel hot to the touch.

It seems the selection isn't working properly. The speedfan is logging errors, and it's struggling to maintain stable performance even at lower throttle settings. Running at 4.8g with 1.57v still triggers throttling, but reaching 3.8g without stalling is possible. Going to 4.5g at 1.46v works smoothly with minimal throttling, and 5g is extremely difficult to achieve due to power demands. The cooler isn't providing enough cooling, and the P5Q is shutting down automatically at certain voltages. I've tried installing a larger chip and a different BIOS, but it didn't help. The P4 support is missing, which is frustrating. I'm considering using the deluxe BIOS again, though it might not improve things much. This setup is really limiting my testing.

Estimating the P4 is around 65nm with HT, while the 8400 is 45nm dual without HT. The P4 tends to get hotter due to die size and v-core factors. Additionally, there are variations in P4 chips—some soldered and others not.

The 631 model is likely soldered. If not, it should simplify desoldering and make testing easier.
