I have a GTX 1060 Extreme Gaming and since I don’t like the xtreme gaming engine app, I chose to use the OC mode clocks through afterburner. My card can handle it well, but I’m unsure if afterburner must be running for the OC to work or if I can just close it after clicking apply. Also, I don’t want it to start up automatically, so I won’t recommend applying it at startup or any other option.

It should definitely stay in place.
Open AB, apply the OC. Close AB, restart PC.
Check if the OC sticks—this will indicate whether it's necessary or not. I think it probably won't, since I don't need to keep precision xoc open for my EVGA card.

My prediction is no, since I don't require precision xoc open for my EVGA card.

Check if the OC sticks after closing AB.
The numbers in afterburner still look like they were saved yesterday, so it didn’t reset.
Still, no task manager suggestion indicates the OC is active when AB is closed.
Does this mean the OC is working even when AB is off?

If an exact hardware monitor was used, it would definitely display the OC.
