Is the 6700k OC at 4.6GHz a safe setting?
Is the 6700k OC at 4.6GHz a safe setting?
Hey everyone
I did some OC tweaking on the 6700k to 4.6 and the core voltage is around 1.290v-1.312v under heavy load. Is that within a safe range? Should I lower it further? Under heavy load, CPU temps are below 55°C, about 16-20°C when idle. The only hotspot is the GPU, which reached 80°C. Any advice or feedback would be really helpful.
I noticed Lars took over the OPs thread and I was responding to the incorrect post. The original poster said his GPU issues are more related to the GPU, so I suggested setting up a fan curve for cooling. I was replying because this is his thread. Honestly, Lars doesn’t seem to have significant CPU temperature concerns (55-60°C) during heavy use. Your idle temps are also fine, which is normal after stress tests like Prime95 and Aida—these are hot tests. I agree 70°C is high, but you probably won’t reach that in real gaming. You might want to try Realbench or x264 instead. My 6700K idles around 20-23°C and stays below 58°C under full load at 4.6GHz @ 1.29V...
It's advised to keep the CPU below 1.4v on the Skylake processors; you should be okay. Your GPU temperature is a bit high, but if it stays between 70-80°C you should be fine—just avoid exceeding 80°C for extended periods, as this might harm your cards over time.
How are you managing these low temperatures? I'm seeing around 70 degrees on AIDA64 with CPU and FPU turned on. I have an i7-6700k and a Noctua NH-D15. On Battlefield 4 I'm getting about 58 degrees. Also, my CPU isn't overclocked.
How are you managing those low temperatures? I'm currently at 70 degrees on AIDA64 with CPU and FPU enabled. I have an i7 6700k and a Noctua NH-D15. On battlefield 4 I'm around 58 degrees. My CPU isn't overclocked. I used Corsair H105 AIO liquid cooler. I didn't stress test the CPU using AIDA64, but ran Realbench for an hour and temperatures were normal. The only hot spots are the GPU, which is due to the low stock fan speed.
I achieved 64 degrees in Prime95 version 26,6 small FFTs. With AIDA64 and the FPU enabled I reached 70 degrees. When running Battlefield 4 I got 58 degrees. I suspect something is off with my setup :/
I received 64 degrees in Prime95 version 26.6 small FFT's. With fpu enabled I got 70 degrees. When playing battlefield 4 I get 58 degrees. I have a stock i7 6700k with a noctua nh-d15. Something seems off, maybe :/
1. Did you apply the thermal compound correctly or did you use too much?
2. Did you secure the cooler properly enough?
3. Try to reapply the thermal compound?
That’s what I’m thinking at the moment.
I would place the fan curve on your GPU, ensuring it stays below 70. The stock fan profile is relatively light and should be adjusted to maintain cooler temperatures. Although you need to manage those heat levels, it's always preferable to keep them lower. I wouldn't want my GPU exceeding 80 degrees. My 980TI typically doesn't surpass 68°C even under full load with the appropriate fan curve.
I would adjust the fan curve on your GPU, ensuring it stays below 70. The stock fan profile is relatively light and should be fine-tuned to maintain cooler temperatures. It's better to keep them lower than 80, as my GPU never exceeds 68 when running at full load with the right curve. I think the issue might actually be with the CPU. My retailer suggested sending it in for a new one, and the cooler was very well bonded with the thermal paste—removing it caused a quick drop in temperature. Could this affect performance?
