Is SecuROM Dangerious?
So yeah, I recently saw some news articles regarding EA "sneaking" SecuROM into this free version of the SIMS 2, Ive known for a while I have games that use this on my PC but to be honest I haven't really cared until now. All these news articles are going on about it like its a terrible thing so I'm just wondering is this software actually damaging specifically to my computer? Or is it mostly just a principles thing thats getting people so up in arms? Edit: Cannot spell Dangerous -.-
They rarely think about other factors before things happen. Did they be using their CD drives as cup holders just before? Many people assume it's a security issue, which makes me frustrated when my broken DVD drive seems to be caused by it... If this were real, the company should have confirmed it, but it feels like a myth.
There are options to reduce the annoyance, though. I’m unsure if linking them is permitted—it feels like it limits your freedom.
Securom was seen as outdated by now. It’s surprising that EA is offering it for free with a Sims 2 download. Given the numerous class action lawsuits they faced over it, it makes sense. I came across a few random articles quickly online: one about EAs threatening to cancel Spore accounts, another discussing EAs relaxing DRM on Spore and adapting their policies, and a third highlighting EA’s two more lawsuits concerning Steam usage. There were reports of hardware damage and broken Windows installs, essentially installing a root kit. They also imposed restrictions on how many times you could install games. Overall, it felt like a major setback. If you want to push DRM, Steam remains the preferred choice today—it’s straightforward and avoids unnecessary complications. I favor GoG’s no DRM model, and if they introduce a Galaxy client with Steam’s full features without DRM, they’d have more room to challenge Valve.
