I have a straightforward yet challenging concern—should I replace a burnt GPU if the PSU might have caused it? Or should I take extra steps to avoid further damage? Here’s what happened in my troubleshooting timeline:
1. All screens went back during game load, fans spun at full speed.
2. After restarting, the PC reached the desktop but shut down after a few seconds.
3. The power button stopped working—no beep, no boot LED, no fault lights, fans didn’t spin, and no DP signal was detected.
4. I unplugged all peripherals except keyboard and monitor, but nothing worked.
5. I removed the GPU power cable (it was left in a socket), turned it on, and saw sparks and smoke.
6. After disconnecting, the GPU and monitor connected to the motherboard’s DP, and the PC booted normally.
If I get a new GPU, can I simply reinstall it without worrying about immediate damage? What precautions should I follow to ensure the new one is safe?

There's the possibility that the cables have also damaged as a result. I wouldn't risk plugging them into a new card. Buy new, official cables for your PSU if those cables are modular (can be unplugged from the PSU and replaced). If they're not modular then unfortunately you should replace the PSU as well.
Apologies for the confusion - the PSU wasn't connected when I unplugged the GPU power cables. All connections were removed, even the monitor (switch on extension cord). Sparks appeared only after I connected the PC and pressed the start button.

The sparks seemed to come from around the power cable entry points, not from the chip or output sections. I'll need to disassemble it to investigate further. It still smells like hell, even after hours since it burned.
Fortunately, the PSU has plenty of headroom—it was more than sufficient for the GTX 1080 I had. Originally, I planned to buy an RTX 4080, but since that series isn't very convincing, I ended up skipping it. It seems I'll have to go ahead with the current setup...

Considering that, the cables for the GPU were quite limited - just barely enough without bending or applying pressure, I think. Using another PCIe slot wouldn’t have worked. It’s an inverted situation (glass on the right instead of left), and the manufacturer probably forgot about cable length even though they advertised otherwise. I picked the same case and PSU brand for this reason, but it was still very tight in certain areas.
