Is my i5 4690K running too hot
Is my i5 4690K running too hot
I've owned this CPU for a long time and wanted to extract more performance. I overclocked it to 1.2V and 4.3GHZ. I didn't monitor the temperatures before, but with this new setup I'm seeing 35-40°C idle and 73°C under load. Is that excessive? I've seen others using 1.3V at 4.6GHZ with temps staying below 60°C.
EDIT:
My mistake, I'm using the 212 EVO model.
Also, I was considering increasing to 1.3V and 4.6 or 4.7GHZ. Could you advise on acceptable idle and maximum temperatures? I've heard that keeping it under 80°C during load is acceptable.
I wouldn't expect a 4690k to exceed 60c at 1.3v and 4.6ghz. Probably only if it was running at partial load instead of being fully stressed in games or with tests like p95 or rog real bench. The environment would need to be very harsh, such as 10-15c with full water cooling. Possibly newer chips like the 6600k or 7600k perform better and stay cooler. As others mentioned, the 212 evo is a cheaper cooler that might let mild overclocking happen. Achieving 4.6-4.7ghz on a 4th gen chip isn't really considered mild overclocking; better cooling would be necessary. Higher ambient temperatures will also impact overall cooling performance. Most tests are usually conducted at around 22c (71-72°F), since both system and CPU heat increase with temperature.
If you're working with an overclockable CPU, using a stock cooler is a beginner mistake. Just install a large water pipe from the main supply and put in some effort into it, lubricate the connectors, and you should be fine.
based on the method you're using to load the CPU, those temperatures are acceptable, particularly with a stock cooler. however, I wouldn't enable OC on a stock cooler.
NDC1995 :
temps look OK. Also depends on what kind of cooler you're using.
Is it the standard cooler? If so, be careful with overclocking. Also not every chip is the same.
Temp readings under 35 degrees are for some reason not very accurate anyway.
Sorry I didn't mention the cooler is the 212 evo.
that's a solid cooler for handling at least a mild increase in chip temperatures. what kind of tests were you running?

Question from ZG360: "I5 4690k getting 85c at 1.3v"

Checking your setup – max 86°C at load with real bench 2.43, 212-evo cooler, 4.6ghz at 1.3v overclock. Haskell processors handled 1.3v well. Any tips? Also, Arizona temps around 80°F. You’re essentially answering your own query...
4.6ghz @ 1.3v overclock + 80°F ambient + 212-evo = 86°C under load."
