Is it worth giving up on the X13 motherboard?
Hi, I own an Asus ROG flow x13 gv301, and I really enjoy using it. Recently, my child accidentally spilled milk all over it—about a full glass—and it stayed there for a few hours. After removing the back panel, disconnecting the battery, and beginning the disassembly, I cleaned everything with 99% isopropyl alcohol. The process was mostly successful; however, I broke the flex cable linking the power button to the motherboard while trying to clean underneath without fully taking it apart. I didn’t remove the heat pipes from the CPU or GPU, but I did clean around the fans. After reassembling, I powered it back on and it booted into Windows right away. The fingerprint feature didn’t work because the power button was still there, but I entered my PIN and logged in without issues. Everything looked fine except for the power button itself.
Later, when I plugged it in, it shut down repeatedly—turning on for about two minutes before powering off again. When I replaced the power button, it worked perfectly. However, if it’s not connected, it shuts off after roughly two minutes. Whether I’m using Windows or the BIOS, it reports a CPU temperature of 103°C, which seems high but doesn’t indicate a complete meltdown. It doesn’t get noticeably hotter before shutting down, and it only shows the temperature reading of 103°C.
My main concern is whether I should sell the used motherboard from eBay for $400 or if I should give up and start saving for a new laptop. There might be other fixes I could try in between. I suspect the power supply unit might be part of the motherboard, given that nothing else stands out inside. I’m fairly skilled enough to solder wires or possibly handle small components on a custom board, but I’m not confident enough to inspect or repair tiny parts on a laptop motherboard. There are signs of corrosion, which makes me wonder if it’s still functional despite the issues. Overall, it seems to start up at all, so I’m a bit surprised it works at all.
