The reason I asked is because I successfully built a PC using some spare parts I had for my cousin. It includes a Ryzen 5 2600 with a stock cooler, B450 Aorus Elite, two NVMe SSDs, 16GB RAM at 3000MHz CL16, an EVGA GTX 1070 that needs two 8-pin PCIe connectors, and an Energon 650W PSU with only one 8-pin connector for the GPU.
Right now I’m a bit doubtful about starting up the PC just to test if everything is working properly on that single 8-pin connector.
Also, since I don’t want to spend extra money, is it a good long-term solution to connect the Molex to PCIe and use the other slot for the GPU? Since the GPU won’t be overclocked, it should mainly be used for schoolwork and some games.
No, it won't function as intended. Using an Energon 650W PSU with a garbage-tier GPU from a long time ago is not recommended, especially if you need extra power for the GPU. Molex to PCIe connections can be risky and should only be attempted if you're ready to invest in proper power solutions. If you can't afford to upgrade your setup, consider selling the GPU and opting for a more affordable alternative like a GT 710.
Keep in mind, thanks for the guidance. I’ll put the project on hold until I find a suitable PSU that can adequately supply the package, right? A 550W unit seems sufficient for the requirements?
550w works for that PC, but I’d rather spend more on a 650w PSU from Corsair or Seasonic. What’s your budget?
the main series should work well enough on your setup, just use one that fits your rig.
i've been using corsair and seasonic for years.
not every psu is perfect, but cx line corsairs are a mixed bag.
i haven't seen a junk seasonic yet.
my advice remains the same, but i suggest doing some research on reviews before you buy.
