I just purchased a new RAM kit for my main computer—a 8x8GB DDR3 2000MHz G-Skill Ripjaws set priced around $70. It’s not a lot of money, but these modules seem questionable.

I stumbled upon them on eBay because they weren’t a bad deal, though they originated from China, which also explains the delayed arrival.

Visually, they look genuine, although the stickers on the back of the two spares match the information. I’m not sure if that matters much.

My computer was set to 1333MHz, and the Task Manager displayed “48Gb Other at 1333MHz.” After switching to 1866 and 1600 MHz, it now just shows “48Gb.” It doesn’t specify the exact name, speed, or type. Both HWMonitor and UserBenchmark aren’t showing any details, though the BIOS does list the selected speed.

I recall that CPUID lists a DRAM frequency of 801.7MHz, which seems low compared to what I expect. It’s possible my board was designed to support 48Gb initially, but it still works with it.

I’m unsure if I’m making a mistake or if I’m correct. I’ll try reverting back to 1333MHz to check.

EDIT: CPUID reports 668.1MHz, so it doesn’t match what I’m expecting. I have a thought. Is my power consumption being directed to the RAM as well? Also, HWMonitor no longer recognizes the RAM when 1333MHz is enabled, and UserBenchmark can’t report its speed either—only the BIOS shows the chosen frequency.

It’s still an improvement over 24Gb, so I won’t complain. It wouldn’t be a good project if it had issues.

Because RAM is DDR, it indicates Double Data Rate. The frequency stands at 668.1 MT/s or 801.7 MT/s, but the actual effective rate is double that value. This results in approximately 1336.2 MT/s (close to 1333 MT/s) and 1603.4 MT/s (close to 1600 MT/s). A few DDR3 DIMMs support up to 2000 MT/s, though none of G.Skill’s products list such high speeds. Their 8GB Ripjaws DIMMs are rated at 2000 MT/s only in the 2x 2GB configuration. There are no 8x 8GB models available in the Ripjaws range either.

EDIT: Actually, I was incorrect—checking the page shows it's Ripjaws X operating at 1600MHz.
But this doesn't clarify why the details remain hidden when using that frequency.

It was once a novel MoBo design. Nowadays, MoBos are more refined. (Simpler to manage.) It's important to use correct terminology to avoid confusion. For instance, I've encountered someone referring to all RAM modules as SIMM, even though it doesn't match the actual type. That's incorrect.

In HWinfo64?
"Memory Reference Clock" multiplied by "Clock Ratio" equals "Memory Clock". Therefore, if your memory clock is 668.4 and the ratio is 5:1, your reference clock stands at 133.68.

For example, my DDR4 has a reference clock of 100.2 with a 15:1 ratio, resulting in a memory clock of 1503. However, since I use DDR, the actual frequency becomes 3006 (rounded up to 3000).

Clear. If HWinfo64 displays your memory clock as 800, you're effectively running at 1600.

If it's not exactly 800 but around 666.7, adjust the RAM XMP settings in BIOS to achieve the desired performance.

Almost every single one of the 1366 CPUs and motherboards operates at a memory rate of 1333. I really appreciate the triple channel memory in these older boards; it seems to be the key that allows them to still perform well today.

Looks good. You mentioned having the same case in blue, plus black and yellow versions. Is this one of the original Alienware models before Dell?

Sadly this one is a knockoff, I believe an Apeiva branded case. Only bad thing about it is that the door hinge is glued in place, broke long ago, only if they made it out of metal.
The one beside it, which can be barely seen in the photo, is a 2004 Star Wars case, a little beat up, not stock in the slightest. I think it has a late 90's early 2k's ASUS performance board with some other hardware.
I also have a 2006 case, short one, in very nice condition, also fully complete stock hardware minus the GPU.
Both of these are pre Dell, although these older cases are practically the same throughout the different brands, only the inner chassis though.
