Is it possible that the CPU is the issue after the PC briefly turned on and then shut down?
Hello there, young spirit seeking a tale for a stormy evening. đź‘»
I faced a strange issue with my computer after hours of searching, but nothing seemed to work... So I turned to a community forum for help. Here’s what I shared:
The problem was that when I powered on my PC, both the power supply unit and the CPU fan would briefly activate, then shut down, and the machine wouldn’t come back on.
I cleaned everything down to the simplest parts—just the CPU and one RAM stick—connected to a motherboard and the PSU.
Then came the twist: I swapped out the motherboard and the PSU, but the issue persisted. I even tried using an older motherboard and CPU, testing them together. That setup functioned perfectly.
However, my current CPU and the old one don’t match in socket type, making it hard to swap them easily. Still, I recently bought a new motherboard, but it didn’t help.
While troubleshooting, I woke up one night to a strange sound—like the PSU fan started spinning on its own (perhaps a ghostly occurrence?). I rushed over and unplugged it, thinking about overheating, but the CPU was completely cold.
This has left me wondering if the CPU might actually be the culprit. Is that even a possibility?
And if so, what could have caused this strange malfunction? There’s no spill of coolant, no pin damage—just complete failure.
At this stage, I’m tempted to keep replacing parts until it works, but my budget as a student is tight, and I really want to understand the mystery behind this eerie computer issue.
Warm wishes, and may your year be bright!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.
I'm mainly trying to find a response to whether the CPU could be the cause or if it's nearly impossible, since the hardware details aren't crucial. The key factor here is the CPU itself, specifically an Intel i5, though I'm unsure of its exact model because it's protected by cooling paste.
Details are important. Understanding the exact nature of what we're dealing with helps members provide better answers and address the problems more effectively.
This might involve a CPU, power, or motherboard issue that led to the original problem before you began swapping components.
With all the changes made, it seems the case or chassis hasn't changed much. Is the power button functioning correctly, or is it stuck?
On your Motherboard do you have little LEDs that light up when trying to boot?
Should be top right of board (well mine is) and be called:
CPU
DRAM
VGA
BOOT
When you try to turn on you system check for these lights, they normally go in sequence but if there is an issue it will stay lit on the one that's causing the issue
