had to swap out my old 7700k and went fairly easy with a 5600G yesterday. I watercooled the system again and the CPU is idling around 40°C—this is normal or should I inspect the CPU block? Or could there be some special BIOS tweaks I need to check? The GPU sits at 27°C and the CPU at 43°C. I have two Xeon E9-1490X CPUs, two x86 TX 240 units, an ekwb X99 processor (with AMD mount plate), everything running on a Gigabyte B550i board.

The Ryzen 5000 line features a strong idle voltage, causing temperatures to rise. Around 40-50°C during idle is typical in air, and because PBO adjusts voltage and clock speed, idle stays near that range—usually about 80°C, varying by ±5°C.

Are you sure? It seems like the voltage and clock speed will keep rising even after cooling, reaching 40°C idle and 80°C under load. What does PBO stand for?

Is it really idle, or is there some small background task going on? My 5600G idles between 30-33°C with an air cooler. Also what Windows power plan are you using? "High Performance" prevents the CPU from powering down properly during idle, I prefer "Balanced". Check Ryzen Master to see what the boost algorithm is doing.

master displays three cores in idle mode—one running at full speed, two showing unstable performance. That’s the snapshot I had in mind from yesterday. Temperatures were around 39°C, with the GPU sitting at 28°C doing absolutely nothing except launching Ryzen Master and Discord while watching a YouTube video.

It seems PBO isn't the activation I'm looking for. I'll review the BIOS later to find alternatives.

This setup doesn't appear to be running smoothly. When the system is idle and PBO is active, the 5600G shows this particular configuration.

PBO offers a useful enhancement and I wouldn’t disable it, just fine-tune manually. In the BIOS, search for Precision Boost Overdrive and adjust the values beginning with a negative offset of 10, increasing by 5 increments until you see instability or reduced performance (cores don’t ramp as much). Return to the previous stable setting. Typically offsets between 10 and 20 are reliable and won’t harm performance, though they may slightly lower CPU temperatures.

PBO is enabled, temperatures rise but clock speed also climbs. Rather than operating at 4.4GHz under maximum demand, the processor will increase to 4.6GHz or above. Greater cooling results in even faster clock rates.

Just keep the temperature low and let the GPU process data without any noise. In idle mode, I want it to shut down completely. I don’t want to run high clock speeds or open browser tabs with 5GHz; instead, just turn off the fans if possible.
