Is it my hard drive that is dying because of the power supply?
Hi everyone! My computer setup looks like this: Motherboard is an ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero (brand new), RAM has two sticks of 48 GB using DDR5 at 6000MHz (also brand new), the power supply is a Corsair RM1000x that's been used for three months, and there are two solid state drives. One drive is a Samsung 990 Pro that I had working but it was on RMA so it's gone now. Another one is a Samsung 980 which I bought as a replacement three weeks ago. My graphics card is an ASUS Prime RTX 5080 (brand new), and my cooling system for the CPU is an Arctic Liquid Freezer 360 AIO (brand new).
My guess is that it's my power supply unit, but I can't tell if it's the PSU or something else. The problem started three weeks ago when I tried running a virus check or archiving files and then immediately froze. After restarting the computer, the SSD was gone. When I turned off and back on, the BIOS still saw the SSD and said it was bootable.
Now that I've had my new power supply for three months and used two new drives (the 980 one is about three weeks old), I think my PSU can't kill my hard drives anymore. But something is happening again in a similar way. Every time, the same thing happens: it freezes after I try to save or check things, then restarts but loses that SSD drive.
I'm scared that my PSU will die soon (maybe today? or maybe it's already on its way to breaking down?). I really suspect it is the power supply because this keeps happening even though everything else looks fine. My temps are okay everywhere (Motherboard, CPU, VRM, GPU, RAM), and Windows 11 runs great with my games too.
I tried unplugging every cable and making sure they were all connected very carefully. I am really stuck here and don't know what to do because the problem keeps happening at different times but in a similar way.
You probably got SSDs that came in a bad batch. Check out this link for more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/commen...s_it_okay/ Speaking of which, did you update your SSD's firmware using Samsung's Magician App? Also, is your BIOS version current? How can I check it? A good power supply tester like the one from PassMark costs money and isn't always available. I have another computer, but not enough time to test it here. If your power supply could be causing the damage by killing other hardware, I won't plug it into a different system. This post was moved from the Components section to Systems because of that change.
Sorry to post in the wrong place. My motherboard BIOS is current for my MoBo (1401, only 1 day old). I have updated this one too and am using a Samsung 980, while my other board worked with a 990 Pro and also got the latest firmware. I will check Reddit, but I think I might try running OCCT to test the power supply. Maybe this 980 is just super unlucky along with the 990 Pro that are actually on RMA... But since other people had similar issues with SSDs or parts, could it be the PSU is broken?
You might want to try using any software tool you like, like AIDA or HWiNFO, just to check the voltage levels of those two lines: 3 volts and 1.8 volts. That's what matters because M.2 devices need them right. I used this before when my computer restarted too often after an HDD was stressed, since it got way too low on the 5 volt line (under 90 percent). If any power line is off by more than 10 percent high or low, that means your power supply unit is broken.
