Is it advisable to limit frames per second on the ASUS VG248QE monitor?
Greetings, everyone!
This is my inaugural post here. I’ve just completed assembling my initial gaming computer, and I selected the Asus VG248QE 144Hz monitor for my display. I plan to dedicate a significant amount of time to online games, with Fortnite being my primary focus, alongside CS:GO and Battlefield V. With an RTX 2060 in hand, I anticipate achieving remarkably high frame rates on Fortnite at lower settings – likely around 240 fps. I’m uncertain whether my monitor supports V-sync or G-sync (I suspect it doesn't, but please correct me if I’m mistaken). However, I’ve encountered varied opinions regarding frame rate limiting; some suggest capping them in-game, while others advocate for leaving them unrestricted. Certain individuals even propose specific limits like capping at 142 (a bit below 144), or setting it to precisely 144, reasoning that exceeding this value is unnecessary given my monitor’s refresh rate. Others suggest capping at 160 to minimize input lag and prevent GPU strain. Can you discern which advice is accurate, and what are the justifications behind it? Furthermore, does my monitor’s lack of any synchronization technology impact these recommendations? Thank you.
Many individuals suggest limiting frame rates to 142 due to its ability to prevent screen flickering. SypherPK typically sets his display rate at 237 for the same purpose. Regarding your question, the VG248QE is an excellent monitor and I plan to purchase one soon. I suggest setting a cap of either 142/144 or 165. When playing Fortnite, a frame rate just above 120 appears exceptionally smooth, and when comparing rates such as 150fps to 240fps, I don't perceive a significant distinction. I believe that exceeding 100 fps is ideal, considering that more is generally better; however, I don’t believe you'll require anything exceeding my suggested levels as capping at these values can lead to visual distortions on your screen. The RTX 2060 should comfortably achieve 160fps within games, particularly with reduced graphics configurations.
