Is it a concern about the computer turning itself on unexpectedly?
Hello!
I've been working on updating almost all parts of my PC recently. For a while it functioned perfectly, but now it's starting to power up randomly every hour. It used to happen only occasionally when I got home from work. Normally I shut it down, lie down, and then the PC comes back on smoothly. I've heard some people mention the CMOS battery might be the issue, but my system is only a few months old. Anyone have any ideas?
Do you completely power off the system when not in use or when it's asleep?
Certain features like Wake on LAN can activate a computer if a network packet reaches it, and some hardware such as HDDs do this by responding to pings from the host. Are these methods being used?
I am choosing to shut down each time.
It seems there might be something I can do to stop that from happening.
It's not necessary to take any action. Open Device Manager, right-click your network connections, select Properties. Check the Power Management section, uncheck both options, and then click Apply. This process works for each network adapter and all USB ports.
It wasn't too difficult to disable and it worked well, staying off throughout the night without turning on. If this happens again, I'll let you know, but for now disabling Wake on Lan for my Ethernet adapter seems to have resolved it! (It was the "wake on magic packet" setting.)
Said too much, it occurred once more last night. Less intense than before, but I found myself waking up to it.
It could be a program running then. Audio-visual equipment is often susceptible to this, and I've noticed similar issues with printers in the past.
I'm struggling to figure out what's going on. My PC feels really frustrated lately, and it seems like it's only working a few times a week now.
Do you have Steam configured to start automatically when Windows begins? Steam has the ability to initiate a computer update even if it's just been put to sleep. It took quite some time to understand exactly how this worked. This likely happened around ten years ago when we relied on a service called Pacs Portal (no longer available) that identified startup programs by searching for them. It was really a hassle.
